White Oak Shelf
Commissioned for a Seattle kitchen, this custom white oak shelf was designed to fit beneath an existing counter overhang and provide additional storage within a compact footprint.
The composition draws inspiration from the geometric paintings of 20th-century master Piet Mondrian, with the placement of the vertical partitions informed by proportional relationships derived from the golden ratio. The result is a simple arrangement of intersecting planes that feels balanced without being rigid, ordered without being symmetrical.
Crafted from solid white oak, the shelf features exposed joinery that celebrates both the material and its construction. What began as a practical storage solution became an opportunity to explore the relationship between utility, proportion, and craftsmanship.
